About This Service

Calgary’s Trusted Fences & Decks Experts

Your deck is where summer happens in Calgary. Your fence is what gives your yard its privacy, character, and sense of enclosure. All The Moore Landscaping builds both with the same attention to detail: properly permitted, correctly framed, built to survive Alberta's weather, and finished to a standard you'd be proud to show off for years. We treat every deck and fence as a long-term investment in your property, not a quick job to flip.

Calgary's climate sets the bar high for deck and fence construction. Posts that aren't set below frost depth will heave. Framing that isn't sized for our snow loads will sag or fail. Wood that isn't sealed or stained will weather and grey rapidly in our dry, UV-intense summers. We know these failure modes because we've seen them on projects we've been called in to repair, and we build to avoid every one of them on every project we take on.

Options & Materials

Deck and Fence Options We Build

01

Cedar and Pressure-Treated Wood Decks

Cedar is the classic choice for Calgary decks. It's naturally resistant to rot and insects, takes stain and sealant beautifully, and has a warm, natural look that complements most Calgary home styles. Pressure-treated lumber is typically used for the structural framing beneath cedar decking, as it's more cost-effective for framing members that won't be visible. A properly maintained cedar deck is one of the best-looking outdoor surfaces you can have.

02

Composite and Low-Maintenance Decking

Composite decking boards are made from a blend of wood fibre and plastic polymer that doesn't rot, doesn't splinter, doesn't require annual sealing, and holds its colour for decades. Premium brands like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon offer excellent warranties and a wide range of colours and textures that convincingly mimic real wood. The upfront cost is higher than cedar, but the long-term maintenance savings make composite an excellent value for many homeowners.

03

Multi-Level and Elevated Deck Structures

Properties with grade changes often benefit from multi-level deck designs that follow the natural terrain of the yard. Multi-level decks create distinct outdoor zones for dining, lounging, and entertaining, and they allow a smooth transition between the interior floor level and the yard. These structures require more complex engineering and permitting but result in genuinely distinctive outdoor living spaces.

04

Cedar Privacy Fences

A cedar privacy fence is the most popular fencing choice in Calgary residential neighbourhoods. Cedar takes stain and finish well, is naturally durable, and provides complete visual privacy when built correctly. We build cedar privacy fences in board-on-board, tight-board, and shadow box patterns depending on your preference. Posts are set in concrete below frost depth to prevent movement over time.

05

Picket, Post-and-Rail, and Ornamental Fencing

Not every fence needs to be a solid privacy wall. Picket fences create a classic front yard boundary without blocking light or views. Post-and-rail fencing defines a property line or garden perimeter with a more open, rural feel. Ornamental metal or aluminum fencing provides a premium look with virtually no maintenance requirement. We select and build the right fence style for the application and your aesthetic preferences.

06

Pergolas and Shade Structures

A pergola extends your outdoor living season by providing partial shade and a sense of architectural enclosure without fully blocking the sky. We build cedar and composite pergolas as freestanding or attached structures, designed to be compatible with Calgary's wind loads and snow conditions. Pergolas can incorporate string lights, privacy screens, and outdoor curtains for a complete outdoor room effect.

How We Work

Our Process

01

Design & Consultation

We assess your yard, discuss your goals for the space, and recommend the right materials and layout. We handle design drawings for the permit application.

02

Permit & Approval

Decks over 0.6 metres and all attached structures require a building permit in Calgary. We submit and manage this process so you don't have to.

03

Foundation & Post Setting

Posts are set below frost depth in concrete to prevent heaving. This step is critical and done correctly every time.

04

Framing & Structure

Joists, beams, and headers are sized and installed to code. We build the structure to handle Calgary's snow loads without issue.

05

Decking & Finishing

Decking boards are installed with proper spacing and fastening. Railings, stairs, and trim are fitted and the surface is sealed or stained.

Why All The Moore

Why Calgary Homeowners Choose Us for Fences & Decks

Permitted Builds Every Time

We never build a deck without the required permit. Beyond the legal obligation, permits protect you as a homeowner. An unpermitted deck will cause problems when you sell your home, and an improperly built deck that causes an injury is your liability. We pull permits, build to code, and get the sign-off from the city inspector on every applicable project.

Posts Set Correctly Below Frost Depth

The most critical step in any deck or fence build is post setting. Posts set too shallow will heave with our frost and throw the entire structure out of level. We set every post in concrete below Calgary's frost depth, full stop. This one step is what separates decks that stay level for 20 years from ones that start moving in the first two winters.

Framing Sized for Calgary's Snow Loads

Deck framing must be sized to handle the snow load it will see over its lifespan. Undersized joists and beams that work fine in Vancouver will sag or fail under Calgary's typical snow load over time. We size every structural member to code for our specific climate zone and load requirements.

Ledger Connections Done to Code

Attached decks connect to your house through a ledger board. This connection must be done with the correct fastener type and pattern, proper flashing to prevent water infiltration behind the ledger, and an adequate structural connection to your house framing. Improperly done ledger connections are a leading cause of deck collapses. We do this step correctly, and it gets inspected.

Design Guidance From the Start

Before we build anything, we walk through the design with you: deck size and shape, railing style, stair location, material choice, and how the deck relates to your yard, patio, and home. We offer honest input based on what we've seen work well and what we've seen go wrong, and we help you make decisions that you'll be happy with long after the project is finished.

Material Quality You Can Confirm

We use kiln-dried cedar and pressure-treated lumber graded for structural and above-grade applications. We don't substitute lower-grade material to protect margin. When you ask what we're building with, we can tell you exactly, and you can verify it. The material choice shows in how the wood holds stain, resists movement, and performs through Calgary winters over the long term.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a deck or fence in Calgary?
Decks over 0.6 metres (2 feet) above grade require a building permit from the City of Calgary. The permit process involves submitting construction drawings, paying the permit fee, and passing inspections at the post-setting and framing stages before the decking goes down. Fences generally do not require permits, but there are height restrictions: rear and side yard fences are typically permitted up to 1.85 metres, and front yard fences are limited to 1.0 metre within the front setback. Corner lots have additional sight-line requirements. We confirm all applicable rules and handle permit applications on every project.
Cedar vs. composite decking: which is the better choice?
Cedar is a beautiful, natural option that ages gracefully and costs less upfront. It requires re-staining or re-sealing every two to three years and an annual inspection for any boards that need to be replaced. Composite is virtually maintenance-free, doesn't splinter, and holds its colour and finish for decades, but costs more to purchase initially. For clients who want the lowest long-term cost of ownership and don't want to think about maintenance, composite is the better choice. For clients who love the look of real wood and are willing to maintain it, cedar is exceptional. We install both and can walk you through the real numbers on long-term cost for your specific project.
How long will a cedar deck last in Calgary?
A properly built cedar deck, with posts correctly set below frost depth and consistent maintenance including re-staining every two to three years, can last 20 to 30 years. The framing members (joists, beams, posts) in pressure-treated lumber typically outlast the cedar decking boards themselves. Individual boards can be replaced as needed over the deck's life. The foundation and framing work we do at the start is what determines whether the deck is still structurally sound after two decades.
Can you build a deck attached to my house?
Yes, and most of our decks are attached builds. Attached decks require a ledger board connection to your house framing, specific flashing and drainage details to prevent water from getting behind the ledger and rotting your rim joist, and a permit. The ledger connection and flashing are where many deck builders cut corners, and where decks fail. We do this step to code and it gets inspected by the city before we cover it up. We won't proceed to decking until the inspector has signed off.
What fence heights are allowed in Calgary?
In Calgary, rear and side yard fences are typically permitted up to 1.85 metres (approximately 6 feet) in height. Front yard fences within the front setback are limited to 1.0 metre (approximately 3.3 feet). Corner lots have additional requirements related to sight triangles at intersections that restrict fence heights near the corner. These rules are set by the City of Calgary's Land Use Bylaw, and we confirm the specific restrictions for your property and lot position before building.
What is the best wood for a fence in Calgary?
Western red cedar is the most popular and best-performing wood for Calgary residential fences. It has natural oils that resist rot and insects, it takes stain and sealer beautifully, and it holds up well in our climate. Pressure-treated lumber is an alternative that costs less but doesn't have the same aesthetic appeal and can be more difficult to stain evenly. For posts in particular, we use pressure-treated material or cedar with proper concrete bases because post rot is the most common cause of fence failure in our climate.
How do you prevent frost heaving in deck posts and fence posts?
Post heaving happens when the post doesn't extend below the frost depth and the frozen ground pushes it up. Calgary's frost depth is typically 1.2 metres (4 feet). We set all deck and fence posts with the bottom of the post below this depth, set in concrete that extends at least to frost depth. For deck posts, we use appropriate footings sized for the load. For fence posts, we set them in concrete and ensure the hole is deep enough that frost cannot get under the base. This is the single most important step in building a structure that stays true through Calgary's winters.
Can you stain or seal an existing deck?
Yes, staining and sealing existing decks is a service we offer. The process involves cleaning the surface thoroughly, allowing it to dry completely, and applying a penetrating stain or surface sealer appropriate for the wood type and condition. If there are damaged or splitting boards, we replace those before finishing. For a deck that has gone several seasons without treatment, the improvement in appearance after a proper clean and stain is significant.
