About This Service

Calgary’s Trusted Outdoor Lighting Experts

The right outdoor lighting transforms your property after dark. It extends your outdoor living season well into Calgary's evenings, dramatically improves curb appeal, adds a meaningful security deterrent, and highlights the landscape features you've invested in building. All The Moore Landscaping installs professional low-voltage LED landscape lighting systems: path lights, uplights for trees and architectural features, step and riser lights, and automated smart controls. We design systems that look stunning after dark and run efficiently enough to leave on every night without a second thought about the electricity bill.

Low-voltage landscape lighting has improved enormously over the past decade. Modern LED fixtures are far more efficient than the halogen systems they replaced, last 20 to 30 times longer, and produce light in a range of colour temperatures that can be tuned to the specific mood you want for your outdoor space. We work exclusively with commercial-grade, weatherproof fixtures that are rated for Alberta's temperature range, not the budget fixtures that look acceptable on install day but fade and fail within a few seasons.

Options & Materials

Outdoor Lighting Systems We Install

01

Path and Walkway Lighting

Path lights line walkways, driveways, and garden paths, providing safe navigation after dark while adding a warm, welcoming glow to your approach. We position path lights to illuminate the walking surface without creating glare, and we select fixture styles that complement your landscape design during the day as well as at night. Proper spacing and height are critical to the look; too close and they become a runway, too sparse and they lose effectiveness.

02

Tree and Feature Uplighting

Uplighting is one of the most dramatic elements of outdoor lighting design. A well-placed uplight at the base of a mature spruce, an ornamental crabapple, or a distinctive architectural element in your yard creates a focal point after dark that elevates the entire property. We position uplights to illuminate the feature without creating bright spots that detract from the effect, and we choose beam angles that complement the shape of each specific tree or feature.

03

Step and Riser Lighting

Step lights integrated into riser faces, retaining wall caps, or deck fascia boards provide both safety and a distinctive design element. They mark grade changes clearly after dark, eliminating trip hazards, and when combined with path and feature lighting they create a layered lighting scheme that looks professionally designed. We install step lights during the construction phase of patios and walls or can add them to existing structures with minimal disruption.

04

Deck and Patio Lighting

Deck post caps, railing lighting, under-bench lighting, and downlighting from pergola beams all contribute to an outdoor living space that functions as well at 9pm as it does at 3pm. We design deck and patio lighting to create a warm, functional atmosphere for dining and entertaining, not a harsh floodlit environment. Dimming controls and zone separation are important in this context and we design them in from the start.

05

String Lights and Bistro Lighting

String lights and bistro-style overhead lighting create a festive, relaxed atmosphere for pergolas, decks, and covered outdoor spaces. We install permanent string light systems with proper weatherproof wiring and mounting hardware designed for Alberta's temperature range. Permanent systems look cleaner and last far longer than seasonal clip-up string lights, and they can be integrated into the same automated control system as the rest of your outdoor lighting.

06

Smart and Automated Control Systems

The most convenient outdoor lighting setup is one you never have to think about. We install smart controllers with app-based scheduling, dusk-to-dawn photocell sensors, and zone control that lets you set different schedules and intensities for different areas of your yard. Smart systems can also integrate with home automation platforms for scenes and voice control. We configure every system we install so you leave with it working exactly the way you want it.

How We Work

Our Process

01

Lighting Design

We walk your property at dusk or discuss your priorities and design a lighting plan that highlights the best features of your yard and home.

02

Fixture Selection

We select commercial-grade, weatherproof LED fixtures sized and styled for your landscape. We'll show you options that fit your aesthetic.

03

Wire Routing

Low-voltage wire is routed underground cleanly, away from irrigation lines and other utilities, with proper burial depth.

04

Fixture Installation

Fixtures are positioned, staked, and aimed precisely. We do a full test run in the evening to verify placement and angles.

05

Programming & Handoff

Timers and smart controls are programmed to your schedule. We walk you through the system and make sure everything is exactly how you want it.

Why All The Moore

Why Calgary Homeowners Choose Us for Outdoor Lighting

Commercial-Grade Fixtures Rated for Alberta

The biggest differentiator in outdoor lighting quality is the fixtures themselves. We use commercial-grade, weatherproof LED fixtures rated for the full temperature range Calgary experiences, not the consumer-grade fixtures sold at home centres that fog up, corrode, and fail within a few seasons. Quality fixtures are the reason our lighting systems still look great 10 years after installation.

We Design at Dusk for the Right Effect

Lighting design is best done when you can see the effect. We walk your property in the evening when designing a system for your yard, so placement and beam angle decisions are made based on what actually looks good rather than a guess made in daylight. This extra step produces noticeably better results.

Clean Wire Routing With No Exposed Conduit

Low-voltage wire routed sloppily across the surface of your lawn or visible along your fence line looks unprofessional and gets damaged by equipment and activity. We route all wire underground through existing beds and lawns, cleanly and at proper burial depth. The finished installation has no visible wire outside of fixtures.

Integrated With Your Whole Landscape

Because we install patios, retaining walls, steps, and planting, we understand how lighting relates to every element of your outdoor space. Step lights integrated during a patio build look far better and last longer than lights added afterward. If you're planning both hardscape and lighting, working with one contractor for both produces a superior result.

Cost-Efficient Systems That Run Every Night

A typical 20-fixture low-voltage LED system costs very little to run, often under two to three dollars per month in electricity at five hours per night. We design systems that you can confidently leave on every evening on an automated schedule, rather than a floodlight system that you only run occasionally because of cost concerns. The right system runs every night and transforms your property every evening.

Systems Built to Expand Over Time

Your lighting needs may grow as your landscape develops. We size transformers and design zone layouts with future expansion in mind, so adding fixtures to a new patio or planting bed down the road is a clean addition rather than a full retrofit. Most of our lighting clients add to their systems within a few years as they see what's possible, and we make that easy.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of outdoor lighting do you install?
We specialize in low-voltage LED landscape lighting systems. This includes path and walkway lights, uplighting for trees and architectural features, step and riser lights integrated into patios and walls, spotlight and accent fixtures, deck and pergola lighting, string lights, and zone-based automated control systems. We use commercial-grade, weatherproof fixtures designed for outdoor use and rated for Calgary's full temperature range.
How much does it cost to run outdoor landscape lighting?
Very little. A typical 20-fixture low-voltage LED system running five hours per night uses roughly the equivalent of a few LED bulbs in electricity. At Alberta's residential electricity rates, this typically works out to one to three dollars per month depending on the number of fixtures and wattage. LED fixtures draw a fraction of the power that older halogen landscape systems used, which is why automated daily operation is practical and cost-effective. We're happy to estimate running costs for any system we propose.
Can you add lighting to my existing patio or yard?
Yes. Retrofitting lighting into an existing outdoor space is one of our most common requests. Low-voltage wire can be routed through existing planting beds, under turf, and along structures with minimal disruption to your finished landscape. As long as there is a suitable power source in a reasonable location (typically near the house), we can design a system that integrates cleanly with what you already have.
How long does outdoor landscape lighting last?
Quality LED landscape fixtures are rated for 25,000 to 50,000 hours of operation, which at five hours per night translates to 14 to 27 years of regular use. The transformer and controller are typically the components that need attention over time, not the fixtures themselves. We use commercial-grade transformers with multi-zone capability and surge protection as standard. Budget fixtures from home centres typically last three to five years in Alberta's climate before they start failing.
Do you install smart or app-controlled lighting systems?
Yes. We can install basic timer-based controllers, dusk-to-dawn photocell systems that turn on automatically at sunset, or full smart controllers that connect to a smartphone app for scheduling, dimming, and zone control. Smart controllers can also integrate with popular home automation platforms. We recommend the right level of automation based on your preferences and existing home tech setup, and we configure everything before we leave so the system works the way you want it to immediately.
What colour temperature is best for outdoor landscape lighting?
For most residential landscape lighting applications, we recommend warm white in the 2700K to 3000K colour temperature range. This produces the warm, golden glow that feels welcoming and enhances natural materials like stone, wood, and plant foliage. Cool white (4000K and above) can look harsh and clinical in residential outdoor settings and tends to show every flaw in materials. For specific applications like work lighting in utility areas, a cooler temperature can be appropriate.
Can outdoor lighting handle Calgary's cold winters?
Yes, provided you use the right fixtures. We install fixtures rated for the full range of temperatures Calgary experiences, which can reach -35C or colder. Quality commercial-grade LED fixtures are designed to operate in extreme cold without performance degradation. The low-voltage wire and connectors we use are also rated for direct burial and cold temperature performance. We have installations that have been running flawlessly through Calgary winters for years.
How is low-voltage landscape lighting different from line-voltage outdoor lighting?
Low-voltage landscape lighting operates at 12 volts DC, transformed from the 120-volt household current at a dedicated outdoor transformer. It is safe to work with, can be self-installed by homeowners in some jurisdictions, and is the standard for decorative landscape lighting. Line-voltage outdoor lighting (120V) is used for security floodlights, exterior wall sconces, and overhead fixtures, and requires a licensed electrician. All the landscape lighting we install is low-voltage LED through a dedicated transformer.
