About This Service

Calgary’s Trusted Landscape Construction Experts

Before any paver gets placed or plant goes in the ground, the land itself needs to be engineered correctly. All The Moore Landscaping handles complete landscape construction from bare ground up: site grading, drainage design, excavation, and structural preparation that ensures every other element of your outdoor space performs the way it should for decades. We have been doing this across Calgary and surrounding communities for over 10 years, and our reputation is built on doing the foundational work right when no one is looking.

Calgary's unique conditions make proper landscape construction more critical here than in many other Canadian cities. Our clay-heavy soils drain poorly and shift significantly with freeze-thaw cycles. Our spring runoff events can push enormous amounts of water across a property in a short period. Homes in communities like McKenzie Lake, Evergreen, Signal Hill, and Tuscany sit on terrain that requires thoughtful grading to protect foundations and keep yards functional year after year. Getting this base work right is what separates a yard that looks great for five years from one that performs for twenty-five.

Options & Materials

Landscape Construction Services We Provide

01

Site Grading and Drainage Design

Grading is the process of reshaping the ground so that water flows away from your home and toward appropriate drainage points. Calgary's clay soils hold water rather than absorbing it, which means grading is critical for preventing basement flooding, foundation damage, and standing water in your yard. We grade to precise specifications based on your lot's topography and your home's elevation.

02

Excavation and Land Clearing

Whether you're starting with a fresh lot, removing an old concrete slab, or clearing overgrown terrain for a new outdoor living project, our excavation work is done cleanly and efficiently. We handle debris removal, root extraction, and soil preparation so the site is ready for whatever comes next.

03

Drainage Systems and Infrastructure

French drains, catch basins, drainage swales, and perforated pipe systems are all part of our drainage infrastructure work. We install these systems to intercept water before it reaches your foundation or creates erosion across your landscape. We design specifically for Alberta's freeze-thaw cycles and spring runoff volumes.

04

Natural Boulder Placement and Feature Work

Large natural boulders and fieldstone are used both structurally and decoratively in Calgary landscapes. We source and place boulders for erosion control, natural retaining applications, focal point features, and garden bed edging. Proper boulder placement requires equipment and experience to do safely and correctly.

05

Full-Yard Design-Build Construction

For new builds or complete landscape overhauls, we manage the entire construction process from blank slate to finished grade. This includes coordinating grading, drainage, base preparation for hardscape, irrigation rough-in, and soil prep for planting, all as a single integrated project with one point of contact.

06

Slope Correction and Erosion Control

Steep or unstable slopes cause erosion, create safety hazards, and waste usable yard space. We correct problem slopes through regrading, retaining structures, bioengineering solutions, and erosion control measures that stabilize the ground and transform previously unusable areas into functional parts of your property.

How We Work

Our Process

01

Site Assessment

We visit your property and evaluate drainage patterns, slope, soil conditions, utility locations, and existing structures before a single shovel touches the ground.

02

Design & Planning

Detailed construction plan with material specs, grading diagrams, drainage solutions, and a clear cost breakdown. No surprises.

03

Excavation & Grading

Proper ground preparation is the foundation of a long-lasting landscape. We excavate to the correct depth and grade for optimal drainage away from your home.

04

Construction Phase

Structural elements, boulder placement, drainage infrastructure, and base work all installed to spec, in sequence, with quality checks at every stage.

05

Final Grade & Cleanup

Site re-graded, compacted, and cleaned up. We leave your property ready for the next phase or for final landscaping.

Why All The Moore

Why Calgary Homeowners Choose Us for Landscape Construction

We Understand Calgary's Soil and Climate

Calgary's glacial till and clay-heavy soils behave very differently from soils in other regions. Add in our aggressive freeze-thaw cycles and spring snowmelt events and you have a landscape environment that punishes shortcuts. Our approach to grading, drainage, and base work is designed specifically for these conditions, not copied from a manual written for Vancouver or Toronto.

Owners Operate the Equipment

Chris and Nick don't send a crew and walk away. When your landscape construction is underway, the owners of this company are on your property doing the work. That means the decision-making happens in real time by people who care about the outcome, not labourers waiting to be told what to do.

We Handle Permits When Required

Some landscape construction work in Calgary requires permits, particularly when it affects drainage, setbacks, or involves significant grade changes. We know what triggers a permit requirement, we manage the application process, and we build to the specifications that satisfy city inspection. You don't need to navigate that on your own.

10 Years of Projects Across Calgary

We have completed landscape construction projects in dozens of Calgary communities, from new developments in Livingston and Cornerstone to established neighbourhoods in Lakeview and Willow Park. That experience means we have seen and solved most of the problems Calgary lots present, and we apply those lessons to every new project.

Integrated Approach From Ground Up

We think about every phase of your outdoor space when doing construction work, not just the immediate task. If you're planning a patio or garden bed later, we account for that in the base prep now. Good construction work sets up every future phase of your landscape to succeed, which is why clients who start with us tend to come back for every phase of their project.

Fully Insured for Every Project

All The Moore Landscaping carries full liability insurance on every project. This protects you as a homeowner if anything goes wrong on your property during construction. When you hire an uninsured contractor for significant landscaping work, you are taking on liability you shouldn't have to. We are happy to provide proof of insurance before any project begins.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you handle permits for landscape construction in Calgary?
Yes. For projects that require city permits, such as work within setbacks, significant grade changes that affect neighbouring properties, or drainage work that ties into city infrastructure, we handle the permit process as part of the project. We assess permit requirements during our initial site visit and include permit costs in the project estimate so there are no surprises later.
How long does a full landscape construction project take?
Scope determines timeline significantly. A standard full-yard grading and drainage project with a single crew typically takes one to two weeks. Larger builds involving multiple phases, such as grading plus base preparation for hardscape plus drainage infrastructure, can take three to six weeks. We provide a detailed timeline broken down by phase before any work begins, so you know exactly what to expect.
What is site grading and why does it matter so much in Calgary?
Site grading is the process of reshaping the ground to control how water flows across your property. In Calgary, this is especially critical because our clay-heavy soils don't absorb water the way sandy or loamy soils do. During spring snowmelt or heavy rain events, water that isn't properly directed can pool against your foundation, flood low areas of your yard, or cause significant erosion on slopes. Proper grading directs all surface water away from your home and toward the street, storm drain, or designated drainage area. It is the single most important thing we do on any landscape project.
What causes poor drainage in Calgary yards?
The main causes are clay soils that shed rather than absorb water, improper or settled grading that has developed low spots over time, compacted soil that won't let water penetrate, and inadequate drainage infrastructure. Many Calgary homes, particularly those in older neighbourhoods, were graded adequately at construction but have had grading issues develop over decades of frost heaving and settling. We identify the specific cause for your property and design the right fix.
How do French drains and catch basins work?
A French drain is a perforated pipe buried in a gravel trench that intercepts subsurface water and redirects it away from problem areas. A catch basin is a surface-level drain inlet that captures surface water and routes it through underground pipe to a discharge point. We use both systems depending on where the water problem originates. For surface flooding, catch basins are typically the right solution. For water seeping through soil toward a foundation, a French drain intercepts it before it gets there.
Can you work alongside an existing landscape design or architect drawings?
Absolutely. We work with existing plans regularly. If you have had a designer or landscape architect draw up a plan, we can build it to spec and we will flag any constructability issues before breaking ground. We can also connect you with landscape designers we work with regularly if you need that step first. Either way, you get a single construction contractor who is accountable for the entire build.
Do you do landscape construction in communities outside Calgary?
Yes. We regularly work in communities surrounding Calgary including Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere, and Strathmore. Travel charges may apply for projects beyond Calgary's city limits. Contact us with your address and project details and we can confirm coverage for your area.
What should I do to prepare my property before construction starts?
The main things that help are: marking the locations of any underground utilities you're aware of (we call Alberta One-Call for official locates), removing or protecting any outdoor furniture or plants near the work area, and ensuring our equipment has reasonable access to the site. For large excavation projects, we'll discuss access requirements with you in advance and plan accordingly.
